THQ’s post-Christmas present to you is the first of no doubt many downloadable games featuring the SpongeBob SquarePants license. But unlike most previous games starring Bikini Bottom’s most famous inhabitant, Underpants Slam is actually a pretty decent time-waster.
The general idea in Underpants Slam is to move about each new level avoiding jellyfish, finding items to break, and collecting 99 pairs of underpants. Once all 99 unmentionables are found, SpongeBob and his friends can move on to the next locale.

Longevity will likely be the only issue facing Underpants Slam. This is not a long game. Each level has a relatively short time limit, and once you’ve played it the first time, you won’t find a lot of variety on subsequent gaming sessions. Of course, the target audience is more likely to be happy simply playing a SpongeBob game, and probably isn’t too hung up on things like variety and replayability.
Licensed games on Microsoft’s Live Arcade service haven’t been all that hot (Shrek ‘n Roll says hi), but Underpants Slam bucks that trend. No, it’s not game of the year, but it’s a solid, playable title that manages to serve the license really well.
