LEGO Rock Band | When this popped up on the rumor radar many months ago, I admit, I scoffed at it and moved on. I thought to myself “what the hell is the point of a LEGO themed Rock Band game?” To be frank, I still think that. Heck, if MTV wanted to release a more family friendly Rock Band game, they could’ve saved themselves the licensing costs and just released…well, a family friendly Rock Band game using the standard look and feel of the franchise. I don’t believe that the LEGO name will have a large affect, but I digress.
This Rock Band game will take the gamer through not just stadiums, but also into different galaxies, putting to use the LEGO world in order to take this series where it’s never been before. Additionally, for the first time ever, you can assemble a band full of your own customized/personalized LEGO-men and take them through the game’s career. Your band will include not just the players, but also your entire entourage, which includes roadies, managers, and stage crew. But wait, beyond customizing your LEGO-men, you can also personalize your band’s hang out pad, by buying furniture and decorating the walls.
Aimed at families, tweens, and teens, the game so far demonstrates a very different type of playlist…with the exception of Blur’s “Song 2″ and Foo Fighters’ “Breakout”. Beyond Blur, so far we know that Carl Douglas’ “Kung Fu Fighting”, Europe’s “Final Countdown”, Good Charlotte’s “Boys and Girls”, and Pink’s “So What” will be featured in the game, which is probably not the song selection your typical Rock Band, and especially Guitar Hero fan would enjoy. But hey, when the final list is revealed and you like what you see, you’ll be happy to know that your original Rock Band, Rock Band 2, and Guitar Hero instruments will work with LEGO Rock Band.
As you can see, the tracklist will cover a number of decades, bringing you the more modern chart toppers, in addition to the songs of yesteryear. Rock Challenges will be a staple of your career, as you’ll need to pull off hardcore momentum and rock out in order to destroy giant robots, cast a storm, or bring down a skyscraper all with the force that builds up within your instruments. Completing songs will grant your band a new LEGO brick, which will allow you to build vehicles and move from one venue to the next, and then, of course, outerspace.
LEGO Rock Band’s visuals will retain the series’ look, albeit with a LEGO twist. The game looks pretty nice and smooth judging by the screenshots, and we have no doubt that it’ll be free of any visual problems. No word on whether or not the game will support any tracks from the standard two Rock Band games (we personally doubt it), and no word on if LEGO Rock Band will have a store of its own songs to purchase to stay consistent with the family friendly vibe.
