The fourth Fallout 3 downloadable expansion, Point Lookout, takes you on a ferry ride to an area that time forgot. It’s a swampy environment that sits just outside the Capital Wasteland filled with gnarled trees, foggy hillsides and inbred monstrosities that live in shacks. This is the area offered up for exploring in Point Lookout for those willing to pony up 800 Microsoft points (US $10), and it’s one of the best expansions yet.

The adventure begins with notice of a ferry boat that will take you to Point Lookout and a woman looking for her lost daughter, Nadine. This main quest line quickly devolves into a series of trippy quests and conversations with things that are barely human. The stories and characters here are filled with that trademark Fallout dark humor, elevating these quests to a level that rivals the main game.

The major draw to Point Lookout, though, is its emphasis on exploration. The vast area takes you from a rocky shore dominated by a lighthouse into the depths of a swampy, irradiated forest filled with inbred country folk. Point Lookout is a Civil War landmark and that history was not lost on the game designers. Along with more history on the fictional Great War that felled civilization, you’ll also find nods to another of America’s real life great battles.

Those that explore it all will find five cool side quests and a handful more unmarked quests that can easily eat up hours of your time. The same care and attention to detail was put into this area that you find in the Capital Wasteland which makes this densely packed area one of the most rewarding places to check out in all of Fallout 3. There’s a lot to see here, as well. I spent an entire day wandering the swamps and still haven’t seen it all. The quests will take you about five hours to work through but you can easily spend a few more just seeing the sights and working through the unmarked quests. Bringing the lighthouse back to life was my favorite little extra.

Before heading into this new content, make sure your character is prepared. Even with a full arsenal and stocked inventory I found the oddities and monsters that resemble the Swamp Thing to be formidable opponents. There must be something in the irradiated water because these guys are tough as nails.

There are a few drawbacks to this download. Those looking for new toys to play with will only find a few and anybody who has already hit the level cap of 30 set by the last download, Broken Steel, will find that cap still in place. The lush landscape looks nice, but all of that vegetation does suffer from some ugly draw-in as you walk through it, and boy, are some of those animations ever growing stale. I also had the game crash on me once during a load which resulted in my save file being corrupted, so other types of bugs may very well be present.
